‘Karagula’ by Philip Ridley takes audiences on a mind-blowing journey through multiple dimensions and parallel universes. Set in a dystopian future, it follows several groups of characters through a world that is on the brink of extinction. With its abstract narratives and imagery, ‘Karagula’ explores the chaos and uncertainty of human relationships.
As both a performer and stage manager of this production, I implemented a variety of skills throughout the process. My role as ‘Jagriti’ was performed entirely in sign language within this production. This required me to translate and learn my role in BSL, a language I am not fluent in, and convey that role with enough emotion through my physicality and body language that audiences could maintain a sense of what I was saying and feeling.
My role as the stage manager of this production became crucial to the development of the process as I was responsible for handling scheduling, ensuring smooth communication between the actors, director and technical team, as well as managing all deadlines.
